Some are made of silver, others of Gold. Emeralds, rubies, sapphires; earrings, tie tacks, and brooches. Most are seen as necklaces worn by untold millions of people—from priests to politicians to punk rockers. For many, it’s just jewelry. For those who know Jesus, it’s a symbol of the unbounded love that God showed through His Son. The beauty of the crosses we see belies its original purpose. That beauty is false, contrived, man-made, misleading. The real beauty of the cross is simply that “God gave…” The real wonder is that God did it for me—and you.

Why People Struggle to Believe

I know this is long and we discourage cut and paste, but I think this is something everyone should read.

You can read it in it's original place here

http://godspuregrace.blogspot.com/2009/1...lieve.html

This makes a lot of sense to me. I've been trying to "create faith" in me... and it has become a sort of work I am trying to do. But faith is not a work of course. It is simply receiving what God has already provided. God does not look in me and find faith and therefore I am accepted. God looks at His Son and sees His Son and me in Him by faith, and me accepted IN the beloved.

Anyway, here it is -

(this guy is an ex baptist. Not sure if he goes by denomination anymore. He is not a hyper dispensationalist or anything. In fact, he warned me against them several times).
------

When I used to believe in the erroneous teachings of Lordship salvation, we had many "invented" definitions of faith that were either not taught in Scripture or read into Scripture. Here are a few to name:

False faith, non-saving faith, hypocritical faith, temporal faith, spurious faith, dead faith, demonic faith, genuine saving faith, emotional faith, head faith, heart faith, intellectual faith, presumptuous faith, obedient faith and so on.

Religion such as Lordship salvation and those that believe you can lose your salvation have made faith a work. With such definitions of faith that I just gave above then it should be no wonder that we have so many asking themselves, "Did I believe the right way? Did I believe enough? Do I have a 'true saving faith' or is this some emotional faith that mimics the true saving one?" We have people psycho-analyzing their own faith to see if it is made up of all the right ingredients.

Free grace believers are not all that much better. When they share the gospel then be sure to notice that when they finish their gospel presentation that they will ask the person, "Did you believe what I just shared with you?" When the person responds back that they did believe such a gospel message then the free grace advocate will say, "OK, would you like to receive Jesus into your heart by faith?"?????? If the person believed the gospel then what is this second act of believing they are calling the sinner to do?? Such methods people invent to lead others to Christ tells me that they too struggle with the free gift concept of doing nothing to receive. They too have invented words nowhere taught in Scripture. They quote Revelation 3:20 as how one receives Jesus in salvation but fails to realize that Jesus was talking to the church. In chapter 2 of Revelation Jesus was talking to an "open door" and in Revelation 3 was dealing with a door shut and it has nothing to do with the door of the unsaved heart.

The danger here is this second act of believing the sinner is told to do. I just shared that Lordship salvation and their emphasis upon faith has caused many to be consumed with their believing, but we also have now many that are consumed with some prayer they have made. The FG believer will ask the sinner to recite some prayer (sinners prayer) and will say at the end, "Did you mean that prayer?" The person always will say, "YES!!" and then the FG believer will tell the person to never doubt their salvation. They will even tell them to write the date in their Bible so that if they are to ever doubt their salvation then they can refer to that date for assurance. Is that Scriptural?? Is that Pauline teaching? No, so don't message me trying to justify it. It is heresy. You might claim that you were saved through such methods but fail to realize that if you are indeed saved then prayer had no part in it. If your confidence is in a prayer you made years ago then can I introduce you to the true Savior you missed?

Some wonder how to witness if the sinners prayer is omitted from the modern day gospel plan. This question is asked because we have been so used to religion telling us how to lead one to Christ where we learn how to seal the deal (prayer). I was on an evangelistic team back in 1991, and we were taught on techniques how to get one out of their seats and down an aisle. We want the lost to do something that we can see as well as for the sinner to see and that is religion folks. To those not sure how to witness without the sinners prayer then my advice is that you first learn how to witness where you will not sound like a telemarketer reading from a script. That is my opinion of many that rely on the Romans road to salvation plan guide as many sound monotone as they share this gospel. Paul said that he preached Christ crucified and so should you. Make the gospel personal to the individual as you present Christ. Lift up Christ and He will draw all men unto Himself. Preach the love of God to mankind. Preach the God that has been reconciled to the world. Preach the God that is not counting sins against man. Preach Christ crucified and preach the risen Savior. Lift up Christ where all that behold Him will be healed (saved). Preach it free and preach it clear!!!

Question, Do you preach law? Do you preach wrath and threats? Do you preach hell fire and impending doom to the sinner? Then you are not preaching the gospel Paul gave. The self-righteous believe that if you do not preach threats, wrath and so on then you make light of sin. Just remember that we preach grace and grace will teach us that us that are already saved to deny ALL ungodliness. Only religion gets that backwards as they will tell you to deny all manners of ungodliness to experience grace. Just make sure that you tell that self-righteous lost preacher that we do not make light of sin but that THEY make light of Jesus Christ and the work that is "finished." Lift up Christ and people will believe!! Lift up faith or works and watch people doubt.

My advice is that when you are through preaching the gospel to the lost that you simply ask him/her, "Did you believe what I just shared with you about how Christ died for your sins and that there is nothing more for you to do? Do you believe that not only were your sins taken away but that Christ became your righteousness?" I am now asking them "if they believe" and it should be obvious that the wording is not exalting faith. I often recap the gospel as I briefly did above but when they answer my question(s) with a "YES!!" then I simply will ask them, "Are you ready to call yourself a Christian now?" This will tell me whether they truly believed or not because they have no so-called sinners prayer to cling on and they have no works either to look at, but only a Savior standing before them. Even my asking them if they believed what they heard is not causing them to be consumed with the word "believing" as they are only focusing on the message that I am asking if they believed. I have now put such people on the spot to see if they have truly believed what they have heard. The flesh would love a prayer to fall back on but now a person is forced to really think about what and whom they are believing. This approach was how Dr Martin Lloyd Jones would do it as I borrowed this from him. I can't tell you how many would be ready to pray a prayer but not simply believe just standing there without doing anything. I have had many that said, "YES!!" to my original question about the gospel but the moment I said, "Ready to call yourself a Christian now?" was when their true beliefs and feelings came out. I would often get a puzzled look followed with: "Wait a minute! Are you saying that I do not need any works to be saved?" This is where they stumble over the simplicity that is in Christ. The veil still exists today in the hearts of many. However, lead them in a prayer and they will jump all over that. I do fear that many will stand before the Lord and say, "Lord Lord, have I not prayed a prayer on June 5th, 1976?"

When you lift up faith and not Christ is the reason why so many are examining their faith to see if it is made up of all the right ingredients. They are told that if they 'truly' believe then they are saved, so they now look for evidences of faith (feelings, works, etc) so that they can believe that they are believing as they hope that will give them assurance that they are indeed saved. Do you see how it promotes doubt? They look at their looking (faith) and not the Person. When you unbiblically add that there is "demonic faith...emotional faith" will only reinforce one's difficulty to believe. I hear so many, "I don't feel faith...I don't see faith working in my life...I'm not sure if I truly believed...What if my faith is not genuine?" This is the product of exalted faith preaching that we have today in religion.

When you lift up prayer then that prayer will often obscure the Person behind it. No wonder we have many saying, "Was I sincere enough when I prayed that prayer? Did I truly understand what I said?" I have met many that have prayed the sinners prayer many times a month to just make sure that they were sincere. I have also met plenty that have no clue about Jesus Christ but told me that they prayed some prayer and the pastor said that they are indeed saved and have a date to prove it. I have even met people that doubted their salvation or drew assurance of salvation because they were told by their parents that they have "asked Jesus in their hearts" at the age of 6. HERESY!! Some in FG as well as many in Lordship salvation will try to comfort such doubters by saying, "If you doubt your salvation then that is a good indication that you have it because the devil would not want you to believe." That phrase is quite popular in religious circles. The FG argument is based upon their logic and absolutely not one verse of Scripture. Being told that doubts indicate salvation is very wrong and dangerous. Why do we think we are smarter than God as we feel the need to invent words, phrases, special prayers and so on when Paul never did?

Doesn't the Bible teach that we are saved by grace through faith? Yes it does. Paul and others have told us believers how we have been saved but what I am dealing with here is this lifting up of faith. This lifting up of faith will always obscure the Person behind that faith as I will soon prove.

Let me ask you, do you struggle to believe the story about Noah's ark? The answer is probably not. You probably read Noah's ark or heard about it in church, and you simply believed what you heard. I'm sure that your pastor did not get up and say, "Do you believe what I just shared about Noah's ark was true? Examine your heart for a moment as their is such a thing as a 'false faith' and tell me that you believed without a shadow of doubt that it rained 40 days and 40 night? Do you believe it or are you just deceiving yourself?" Do you see how an emphasis upon faith changes a story? People that normally believed in Noah's ark are being made to think that there is something more to this believing and they begin questioning it. What if I were to say, "My friend, if you will just believe that Noah's ark is true then you can be saved. Just believe that it rained 40 days and 40 nights and it will be well with your soul"?? I can tell you that people that had no real problem believing in Noah's ark before will be having problems now. What if I were to tell the people that there is such a thing as an emotional faith that mimics the true saving one where one can live and die never realizing that they never 'savingly' believed?? I will only reinforce their doubts all the more.

We have grown so accustomed to hearing such a heavy emphasis upon faith that we often miss how it changes a story. I heard a minister that said, "It is Christ plus nothing to be saved. There is nothing you or I can do to save ourselves." I agreed entirely with that statement but then a little later he said, "Faith is the only THING we can DO to be saved." Which is it then? Is it Christ plus nothing or Christ plus faith??? Look at his statement again and it ought to be clear that he lifted up faith making it a work even though he didn't call it a work but a "thing we can do."

Here is two stories to illustrate my point:

Two weeks ago the gas station behind me was robbed by 3 masked gun men. The sad thing was that a pregnant lady and her 3 year old son entered the gas station unaware of the robbery going on was shot and killed.

Now I merely shared a story and what did you do? Did you search your feelings to see if you believe it? Did you stop to examine your believing to see if it was made up of all the right ingredients? Are you worried about possibly having a false faith that mimics the real one? Or, did you simply hear that story and believe? Thank goodness that the story was not true, but I threw the pregnant lady and her son in it to stir up some emotion on your part. Now let's hear that story again but from our modern day gospel presentation and tell me if the story becomes harder to believe and less personal:

Believe me folks that the gas station two weeks ago behind me was robbed. Just believe that it was done by 3 masked gun men. Just believe today in your heart that this poor pregnant woman and her 3 year old son were shot and killed. Do you believe it?

Do you see why lifting up faith obscures the Person behind it? People that would normally believe are now questioning their believing because someone is lifting it up as some great work that they must first accomplish to be saved. How does someone know that they are truly believing? When they see only the Person. When you see only the Person then you will not be aware of your own believing so why does religion seek to keep one conscious of their believing with all of these added definitions nowhere stated in Scripture? Question, were you aware of your believing when I told you the first story about the gas station robbed? When you heard that the Twin Towers were attacked on 9/11 then were you making a conscious effort to believe it? Did you stop to question whether your faith in what the newscasters were sharing was a 'true genuine' faith or a false faith? No, you simply believed it and never stopped for two seconds to examine to see if you were believing it.

If a sinner asks me "What must I do to be saved?" then I tell him/her "Believe on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ" but I do make sure that I preach Christ crucified. I want to lift up Christ so that their eyes of faith will behold Him. I do not want anyone to look at their own looking. We automatically assume that Paul went around preaching like many do today. Look at 1st Corinthians 15:3-4:

For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

What did Paul preach? He preach that Christ died, was buried and rose again. Now look at verse 11:

Therefore whether it were I or they, so we preach, and so ye believed.

Paul said "So we preach" the death, burial and resurrection, and "so YE believed" the death, burial and resurrection message. The message preached is what they believed. It is sad that I have to counsel many today that have made faith some great thing that they must do first to be saved. They don't see a Person lifted up for them. They don't see a work already done for them. They see that faith=salvation and so faith is this work that they must do before they can believe that they are saved???? I have to explain how faith is no work. How faith is like a beggar who has nothing to offer but can only receive. My attempts most often falls on deaf ears because they want to see this faith in their life (Lordship salvation) so that they can conclude that they are saved. They are not looking at a Person but only themselves.

Many that I have shared this with in the past will often quote verses where people are told to believe. They have missed the point I was raising. It is often those that point out such verses that struggle to believe themselves. My point is not to lift up faith but Christ. You want to give the gospel in such a fashion that the person you are addressing is seeing nothing other than Christ. If he/she believes your message then do not give them a spiritual crutch that might hurt them later. Let them only see Christ and be healed. Preach the gospel of a work done and allow faith to do its proper work. Preach Christ similar to the way I presented the first gas station story where you either believed it or rejected it. If people will not believe the message then do you think leading them in a prayer will?? Lift up Christ and HE WILL draw all men unto Himself. Those believing in Christ will often not even be aware of their own believing but will be rejoicing in a Person because of that believing. Only religion will seek to destroy such a person by telling him/her that there is such a thing as a false faith. The moment the rejoicing person stops to look at their looking will be where faith ceases to operate as they are now on that miserable religious road of bondage. Religion will now rejoice that they have captured another poor soul as they devilishly glory in that persons flesh.

Remember, the Holy Spirit will always exalt Christ, and religion will exalt believing. If your lack of assurance is due to this area of believing then you can be sure that either your religion or your flesh is responsible. If you want faith then it will be found outside of yourself. Trying to see faith will obscure the Person but seeing the Person will produce faith. This is why it is critical that we preach Christ crucified. Lift up Christ and let the eye of faith behold Him.

I stand amazed in the presence of Jesus, the Nazarene,
and wonder how He could love me, a sinner, condemned, unclean.
How marvelous! how wonderful! And my song shall ever be:
When you pass middle age, you begin to realize that you have more days behind you than in front of you. Some people then begin to feel a bit of depression to think that the best days are the ones in the past. Have I already been as good as I will ever be?

Well, for the believer, the question is moot. For every one of us, no matter the age, our best days are before us. Jesus will return and life will be indescribably different when He does. And it's all good. Verse 2 of our passage says that we will be like Him. Hmm... In what ways? How so? We will see Him with new eyes and be with Him (like Him) in new bodies. What a life! Good news! Makes me smile!
Were James mentioned in Mark 3:18 and Matthew from Mark 2:14, Brothers?

I know this James was the writer of the book of James, and was also known as James the Lesser. Scofield says His father was married to Mary the sister of Mary, Jesus' mother. So James and Jesus were cousins. If James and Matthew were brothers, then logically we would assume that he was also the cousin of Jesus.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Christianity Today:

In response to Paul D. Apostle's article about the Galatian church in your January issue, I have to say how appalled I am by the unchristian tone of this hit piece. Why the negativity? Has he been to the Galatian church recently? I happen to know some of the people at that church, and they are the most loving, caring people I've ever met. Phyllis Snodgrass; Ann Arbor, MI

------------------------

Dear Editor:
How arrogant of Mr. Apostle to think he has the right to judge these people and label them accursed. Isn't that God's job? Regardless of this circumcision issue, these Galatians believe in Jesus just as much as he does, and it is very Pharisaical to condemn them just because they differ on such a secondary issue. Can't we just focus on our common commitment to Christ and furthering His kingdom, instead of tearing down fellow believers over petty doctrinal matters? Ed Bilgeway; Tonganoxie, KS

-------------------------

Dear CT:
I've seen other dubious articles by Paul Apostle in the past, and frankly I'm surprised you felt that his recurrent criticisms of the Church deserved to be printed in your magazine. Mr. Apostle for many years now has had a penchant for thinking he has a right to "mark" certain Christian teachers who don't agree with his Biblical position. Certainly I commend him for desiring to stay faithful to God's word, but I think he errs in being so dogmatic about his views to the point where he feels free to openly attack his brethren. His attitude makes it difficult to fully unify the Church, and gives credence to the opposition's view that Christians are judgmental, arrogant people who never show God's love. Ken Groener; San Diego, CA

--------------------------

Dear Christianity Today:
The fact that Paul Apostle brags about his public run-in with Peter Cephas, a well-respected leader and brother in Christ, exposes Mr. Apostle for the divisive figure that he has become in the Church today. His diatribe against the Galatian church is just more of the same misguided focus on an antiquated reliance on doctrine instead of love and tolerance. Just look how his hypercritical attitude has cast aspersions on homosexual believers and women elders! The real problem within the Church today is not the lack of doctrinal devotion, as Apostle seems to believe, but in our inability to be transformed by our individual journeys in the Spirit. Evidently, Apostle has failed to detach himself from his legalistic background as a Pharisee, and is unable to let go and experience the genuine love for Christ that is coming from the Galatians who strive to worship God in their own special way. William Zenby; Richmond, VA

--------------------------

Kind Editors:
I happen to be a member of First Christian Church of Galatia, and I take issue with Mr. Apostle's article. How can he criticize a ministry that has been so blessed by God? Our church has baptized many new members and has made huge in-roads in the Jewish community with our pragmatic view on circumcision. Such a "seeker-sensitive" approach has given the Jews the respect they deserve for being God's chosen people for thousands of years. In addition, every Gentile in our midst has felt honored to engage in the many edifying rituals of the Hebrew heritage, including circumcision, without losing their passion for Jesus. My advice to Mr. Apostle is to stick to spreading the gospel message of Christ's unconditional love, and quit criticizing what God is clearly blessing in other churches. Miriam "Betty" Ben-Hur; Galatia, Turkey

---------------------------

Dear CT:
Paul needs to be pitied. He is in such a pathetic straight jacket of dogmatism. He should remember the words of Jesus, "Judge not that ye be not judged." Jesus obviously gives every man the freedom to find his own truth. Paul is also frequently spouting off on that “imminent” Rapture theory of his and warning that time might be short and that Christians need to be busy preaching Christ (I believe he mentioned that in the second of his judgmental epistles to that very exciting church at Corinth). Such an eschatology of pessimism will weaken the hands of those of us who are trying to save the environment and bring a new social justice consciousness to the Roman Empire. These are exciting new times and they call for new thinking.

Brian McMerging, Emergent Village, on the way to Rome

EDITOR'S NOTE: Christianity Today apologizes for our rash decision in publishing Paul Apostle's exposé of the Galatian church. Had we known the extent in which our readership and advertisers would withdraw their financial support, we never would have printed such unpopular Biblical truth. We regret any damage we may have caused in propagating the doctrines of Christ.
