Nelda and Bob were missionaries in Ghana, Africa for over 40 years. They are both Believers. I would ask for prayer for Nelda as she starts this part of her life without her partner. They were married as near as I can remember 35-36 years. They met on the mission field.
I read an article recently by an atheist who said that the promises about prayer in the Bible prove God does not exist. If prayer worked as "advertised," he said, why would there be any sick people in the world? We could all just pray them all well.

Honestly, my heart went out to this man who apparently has never experienced an answer to prayer. Answers are not to be measured or analyzed or used as tests of God. Rather, they are personal, often private, and immeasurably important in bonding to us to our Lord. Prayer is not a means whereby we can manipulate God. Rather it is communication with Him. Those who know answers to prayer fall more deeply in love with God, not simply out of appreciation, but because of intimacy.

FOR TODAY: Pause for a minute (a real, whole minute) and think about an answer to prayer.

7 years or 3 years of famine?

2 Samuel 24:13 So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall SEVEN years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be three days' pestilence in thy land?

1 Chronicles 21:11-12 So Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Choose thee either THREE years' famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee;or else three days the sword of the Lord, even the pestilence, in the land...

There are many atheistic, Islamic and Bible Debunker sites on the internet which contain longs lists of supposed contradictions in the Bible.

On one Islamic site listing "101 Clear Contradictions in the Bible" this is number four.

Contradiction #4

God sent his prophet to threaten David with how many years of famine?

(a) Seven (2 Samuel 24:13).

(b) Three (1 Chronicles 21:12).

Those Christians who continue to use the modern versions like the NASV, NIV, and NKJV will typically answer these objections in this way which is taken directly from the Apologetics Index.

"It is probably a copyist error and the better preserved text renders the famine as three years -- Walvoord, John F., and Zuck, Roy B., The Bible Knowledge Commentary, (Wheaton, Illinois: Scripture Press Publications, Inc.) 1983, 1985."

Another modern version site by the name of Tecktonic.org Apologetics Ministries has this to say: "Were there seven years of famine offered, or three (per 1 Chronicles 21:11)? Three is the more likely reading, favored by the LXX and by symmetry with the other punishments offered (three months of flight from enemies, three days of plague). Samuel was hit by a copyist error. See our foundational essay on copyist errors for general background. "

So, Samuel was hit by a copyist error, was he? Where was God during this whole process?

Another site that calls itself Rational Christianity - Christian Apologetics, which uses the NKJV has this to say: "This is a copyist error Presumably the correct number is three, since the other choices are threes.

Bible corrector Adam Clark confidently (and mistakenly) affirms: “Shall seven years of famine - In 1 Chronicles 21:12, the number is three, not seven; and here the Septuagint has three, the same as in Chronicles: this is no doubt the true reading.”

John Gill at least offers a reasonable explanation. He writes: “in (1 Chronicles 21:12) , only "three years" are mentioned, and so the Septuagint version here; but Josephus , the Targum, the Syriac and Arabic versions, have the number "seven"... for the reconciling of which let it be observed, that there had been three years of famine already on account of the sin of Saul, (2 Samuel 21:1) ; and in the current year, through the rains not falling in the proper time, the land was barren and unfruitful.. and the sense is, shall there be a continuance of seven years of famine, that is, three more added to what had been?”

Jamieson, Fausset and Brown likewise see the simple truth when they comment: “Shall seven years of famine come unto thee--that is, in addition to the three that had been already, with the current year included (see on 1Ch 21:11).”

In 2 Samuel 24: 13 the prophet Gad comes to David and says: "Shall SEVEN years of famine come unto thee in thy land?"

SEVEN years is the reading of the Hebrew text here as the NIV, RSV, NRSV, and ESV footnotes tell us. The reading of THREE YEARS comes from the Greek Septuagint version, but not the Hebrew.

The false reading in 2 Samuel 24:13 of THREE years is found in the NIV, RSV, NRSV, ESV, NEB, Bible in Basic English, The Message, the Holman Standard, the 1989 Revised English Bible, the New Living Translation and the latest Catholic versions like the St. Joseph New American Bible 1970, the Jerusalem Bible 1968 and the New Jerusalem Bible 1985. However the older Catholic bibles like the Douay-Rheims and the 1950 Douay had the correct Hebrew reading of "SEVEN years".

Those versions that agree with the KJB and the Hebrew reading of SEVEN years are: Wycliffe 1395, Coverdale 1535, the Bishops' Bible 1568, the Geneva Bible 1599, the Revised Version of 1881, the 1901 ASV, the Jewish translations of 1917, 1936, the Complete Jewish Bible, the Hebrew Names Version, even Daniel Wallace's NET version, the Spanish Reina Valera 1909, 1960, 1995, the Italian Diodati 1649, Riveduta 1927, the New Diodati 1991, the French Martin 1744, Louis Segond 1910, Ostervald 1996, the Portuguese Almeida, and O Livro 2000, Martin Luther's German Bible 1545, Rotherham's Emphasized Bible 1902, Lamsa's 1936 translation of the Syriac, the Modern Greek version (not to be confused with the so called LXX), the NASV, Douay, Young's, the New Berkeley Version 1969, the NKJV 1982, the New Life Bible, and even the Living Bible and the Amplified Bible.

This is really a very simple "contradiction" to solve if one just believes God's word as found in the King James Bible and takes the time to read it carefully.

Only in the book of 2 Samuel are we told in chapter 21:1 "Then there was a famine in the days of David THREE years, year after year; and David enquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.

David then, as requested by the Gibeonites, had seven men of the sons of Saul put to death by hanging in "the days of harvest, in the first days, in the beginning of the barley harvest." This couldn't have been much of a harvest because the famine was still in the land. They would then have to wait till next year for a good crop.

Next we read of king David telling Joab to go and number the people of Israel. This census taking seems to have been a vain attempt by David to boast in the power of the flesh. See how stong I am and how many people I command. This was the sin that brought about the threatened judgment of more famine by God.

It is important to see that this numbering of the people took a period of 9 months and 20 days as is noted in 2 Samuel 24:8. "So when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days."

So, what we have here is four years of famine that had already preceeded the time when Gad comes to David and says in 2 Samuel 24:13 "Shall SEVEN years of famine come unto thee in the land?"

But when we look at 1 Chronicles, there is no mention of the famine that had already been going on before David numbered the people. There in 1 Chronicles we read: "Thus saith the LORD, Choose thee either THREE years' famine: or three months to be destroyed before thy foes...or else three days the sword of LORD, even the pestilence..."

So to answer the question: "Were there seven years of famine or only three?", the correct answer is BOTH. There were seven years of famine altogether; four had already occurred and three more years were threatened as a further judgment.

The King James Bible is right as always.

It's hard to imagine anyone who doesn't think he or she is a sinner. It might be easy to justify and convince ourselves that we are no worse than someone else. But simply answering the question, "have you ever done a bad thing," surely we all get it. Yes, I am a sinner and so are you. And what must be the consequences?
But the good news: God intervened. Who is the "we" in our verse today? Obviously it was the writer, Paul, and his readers, the Roman Christians. But no doubt, all those for whom Christ died are part of the "we" as well. it is such good news that we did not have to reach any level of righteousness before, Christ's death could count for us.
Bad news bombards us every day. Earthquakes hit, unemployment spikes, children suffer, terrorists kill…the list is long. But the Bible is full of good news. Let’s take this week to be reminded.

The Christmas story is replete with beautiful and meaningful details, some obvious, some obscure and some so simple we may overlook. Consider the angel’s announcement to the shepherds. The scene starts with one angel telling the men: “Don’t be afraid, I’ve got good news for you: a savior has just been born.” But that’s not enough. Suddenly one angel is accompanied by a heavenly host (who knows how many creatures that is) who proclaim”…and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.” Talk about good news! The God of the universe, Creator of all, the One against whom man sins, announces He intends goodwill toward people. Good news indeed!

FOR TODAY: Imagine what it must have been like to hear THAT good news

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - The FDA is keeping a close eye on a massive food recall.

Salmonella has been found in a company's supply of hydrolyzed vegetable protein.

Processed foods like soups, sauces chilies, dips, dressings and even hot dogs are on the recall list.

A food additive found to be contaminated with Salmonella could be an ingredient in several thousand food products.

The additive is called Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, or HVP for short.

It's used as a flavor enhancer in dips, salad dressings , soups, sauces and many other processed foods.

A customer of the Las Vegas based Basic Food Flavors discovered the Salmonella and alerted The Food and Drug Administration.

Now, more than several dozen products have been recalled and the number is likely to grow.

The FDA said it's unlikely anyone will get sick over this.

Huntsville doctor Tim Howard said it can happen and Salmonella can cause serious infections.

"It's a bacteria that is passed through the gut, so what happens is there could be contamination from chicken," said Dr. Howard.

If you have any recalled products, you should not eat them.

You can take them back to the store where they were purchased for a refund.
We are ready!!!!

How the Lord led us to Autauga Heights Baptist Church

When we found out we were moving to Alabama we immediately began searching online for Independent Baptist Churches that wouldn’t be more than 30 minutes away from us.

We really felt the need to find one that was not legalistic and one that did not have too many children’s activities. We also felt the need to find one that would be accepting of our family regardless of our faults.

When we moved to Montgomery we had a list of 5 churches. All of them were ones that we had done extensive research on, via conversations with the pastors as well as google, listening to sermons online and more.

We had to decide which one would benefit our family the most without us having to compromise too much on our own beliefs. This was a most daunting task.

1 of the 5 churches would have caused us to compromise on our belief that the King James Bible, as edited and standardized in 1769, is God's perfect and unique word, and His final propositional revelation to man in the English language; that it supersedes the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts from which it was translated; that all English versions of the Bible since 1769 are counterfeits and frauds; and that the Authorized King James Bible is God's perfect word, and the only rule of faith and practice. We believe that there are reliable versions and unreliable versions in other languages; but that where any of these conflict with, or contradict, the King James Bible, the King James Bible is the standard against which all others must be measured. We specifically disavow allegiance to "the original autographs," because God, in His wisdom, did not choose to preserve them. The Authorized Version, called the King James Bible, is God's unique, preserved, and perfect propositional revelation, for which we thank Him, and which we strive to study, learn, and obey.

*Can’t go there! Did not want to compromise on the Bible*

3 of the 5 were Independent Fundamental churches and were ones that would have required us to a) let the kids go to all the children’s activities or b) have the kids sit with us in service and resent us for not allowing them to go with their friends. These 3 IFB churches also placed church attendance (including any social functions) as a higher priority than the Lord. That would have caused us to compromise on 2 beliefs –1) that our children need to be with us and that it would be wrong to cause them to be provoked to wrath by withholding the children’s functions from them and 2) that church attendance, while a very high priority & very important, is NOT first. God created the family before he created church therefore it is our belief that it goes in this order: 1) God, 2) Family, 3) Church, 4) Others & 5) Ourselves. We do NOT believe that a church should use church attendance as a gauge to judge it’s members in their Christian walks – rather they should be judged by how they live the Christian life outside the church walls.

The last church is led by a PBI (Pensacola Bible Institute) graduate. It is an Independent Bible Believing Baptist Church. We had marked this church as the last on our list because we were somewhat unsure of it due to it being influenced some by Dr. Ruckman.

We prayed and prayed and prayed before we even moved to AL. We decided that this church wasn’t going to be for us and pretty much checked it off the list. Just before we moved a couple friends of ours from a forum started talking about the pastor of this particular church – they had met him at the Blowout in February. I confided in them some of our fears and we also confided in the pastor about some of them. We also talked to 3 people who personally know Dr. Ruckman. (who we only learned about 18 months ago) We prayed some more. Discussed some more. Prayed some more. Discussed some more. We had conversations back and forth with the pastor. Prayed some more and discussed some more.

After we moved, Carl got an email from someone at Maxwell from another squadron (mind you, nobody knew we were here yet) and welcomed him and invited us to church. This person told Carl that we had been on their prayer list since November and they were all very excited to meet us. On this particular day Carl didn’t know what communications had transpired specifically. He knew I was in contact with the pastor again and that we were going to talk about it when he got home. He forwarded that email to me. That ‘coincidence’ could only be the hand of God. There are no coincidences with the Lord. That particular email WAS the answer – a clear, direct, no doubt about it answer to our prayers that the Lord would direct us clearly because we just didn’t know what to do.

We prayed some more and discussed some more – even made a few excuses to try to get out of it. God left absolutely no doubt in either of our minds and we were at peace with the decision to attend this church. We are waiting to switch our membership over to it for a few weeks or a couple of months, just in case, but we are positive this is where the Lord has us.

This church is not a ‘family’ church. Yes, there are a couple family members in it but there are more ‘non-family’ members than the other. They do not lord the ‘pastor’ title over anyone. The Bible is preached straightforward. There is Sunday School but as of yet no other children’s programs. However, that may change. (smile) There are many children around our kids’ ages. They are not legalistic nor do they preach “Church is the most important” – they take God and the Bible and what God says seriously but not themselves. (smile) They have fun being a Christian and don’t make it a ‘humdrum’ lifestyle.

Anyway – this is how the Lord has worked out our new church home. It may not be the type of church you would be happy in, but it is one that we are happy in. It is one that we can grow, one where we can raise our children in the Word of God, one where we can be who we are and one that we can serve HIM in.

God is GOOD!!!
