From BP to Enbridge and the Gulf to Michigan: is this one insignificant after that one?

By CBC News, cbc.ca, Updated: July 30, 2010 10:10 PM
Michigan oil spill contained: Enbridge

Most of the oil that spilled from a Canadian-owned pipeline into a southern Michigan river has been contained and between 5,000 and 6,000 barrels of oil have been recovered, Enbridge officials say.

"It appears that the oil is now contained, and we are transitioning to our cleanup plan," the Calgary-based company said Friday.

The company said 26 containment booms have been placed along the Tallmudge Creek and the Kalamazoo River to stop the advance of the oil, which is being pumped into tankers.

The company said about 19,500 barrels of oil — roughly 3.1 million litres — leaked from the pipeline, but the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said the amount could be as high as 3.8 million litres.

'We'll know more once we're able to capture, collect and haul away the oil," Enbridge spokesman Alan Roth told CBC News.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who took a helicopter tour over the spill site Friday, said there had been "significant progress" in the containment and cleanup. She said she did not see any oil sheen on Morrow Lake.

Environmental Protection Agency administrator Lisa Jackson said she is "very confident" the spill won't reach Lake Michigan. Granholm had warned of a "tragedy" if the oil were to reach Lake Michigan.

While much of the oil has been contained, Ralph Dollhopf, the federal co-ordinator for the EPA on the scene, said cleaning up the river and surrounding areas could take months.

But Roth said Enbridge is "prepared to stay until the local community and the people in the area agree the cleanup is done to their satisfaction."

Hundreds of workers and contractors were working on the oil spill Friday, along with 36 boats, 12 tanker trucks and more than 70 vacuum trucks, the company said.

Enbridge detected the spill — which sent oil flowing into a creek that feeds the Kalamazoo River — early this week.

Enbridge facing questions

As the cleanup continues, the company is facing questions about how the spill happened.

Crews are trying to dig down to the damaged section of pipe so investigators can determine what went wrong.

Getting to the pipe has been difficult, because it is located in a marshy area, but Enbridge officials said they expected to uncover the damaged section of pipe Friday.

The Associated Press reported that the company has a history of pipeline problems, including leaks and regulatory violations.

Enbridge Inc. and its affiliates have been cited for 30 enforcement actions since 2002 by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, which is the U.S. Department of Transportation's regulatory arm, the news agency said.

In a warning letter sent Jan. 21, the regulator told the company it may have violated safety codes by improperly monitoring corrosion in the pipeline responsible for the spill.

Steve Wuori, an Enbridge executive vice-president, said the company was doing maintenance all along the pipeline this year, but the section at the leak site was not scheduled for replacement.

Now that we've defined our terms....

Steven L. Anderson, 30, is the pastor of the so-called Faithful Word Baptist Church in Tempe, Arizona. The church itself, which was started on December 25, 2005, is a leased classroom-sized storefront property in a strip mall. Although the Lord Jesus Christ did not begin His public ministry until He was 30 years old, Anderson has been preaching since he was eighteen, according to his church website. The website does not specify the date or details of his conversion to Christ. He has been married ten years and has five children.

Anderson calls himself a King James Only Baptist, and, at times, seems to indicate that he and his little flock are the only Christians who deserve that definition. He has publicly and loudly condemned Peter S. Ruckman, Jack Hyles, Charles Spurgeon, Jack Chick, Gail Riplinger, and dozens of others as "false prophets" or "heretics," and specifically says that they are going to Hell. I am making none of this up; all of these things can be found on his church website, and in sermons on his own YouTube channel. He has not hidden his wretched little light under a bushel.

Anderson is known for a number of things, but primarily these two: repeated, well-publicized incidents of conflict with law enforcement officials, and teaching doctrines so strange that they make Ruckman look like a liberal.

It would appear, from looking at YouTube, that Anderson goes nowhere, and does nothing, without his videocamera. Videos abound of him being pulled over for routine traffic stops, and hurling defiance and abuse at the police and other officials. I need not describe these confrontations; they can be seen online at any time. Anderson claims that, in his defiant and impudent attitude toward law enforcement officials, he is merely "asserting his rights" and "refusing to cooperate with the police state." Every time he has one of these confrontations, he has it posted on YouTube within 24 hours, as proof of his "persecution for the truth."

(Alas, he is no legal scholar. He frequently sneers at police that "I don't have to answer your questions! I have the right to remain silent! Haven't you read the Constitution?" [That is an exact quote, which he repeats whenever a camera is rolling, which is all the time.] Sometimes, a patient officer will attempt to tell him that the 5th Amendment only comes into play when one is taken into custody: until then, police can expect answers to reasonable questions.)

The most famous incident came in April 2009, when Anderson was driving on Interstate 8, about 70 miles east of Yuma, Arizona. At a checkpoint operated by the Border Patrol, a K-9 officer smelled something (drugs or illegal immigrants; the dog didn't say), and Border Patrol agents asked to search his car. Anderson, to put it very mildly, declined. By the end of the conversation, he had been removed from his car, Tasered, and (this is unclear) maybe thumped a few times. The video of this incident went viral on the Internet. Not since the Maid of Orleans was put to the flames has any Christian gotten so much publicity for "persecution." Anderson sued the Feds, the Feds sued Anderson, and nothing really happened: nobody lost their jobs, and Anderson didn't go to jail.

Thus far in his young life, this was Anderson's Finest Hour: he even made CNN, Fox, and was interviewed by Alan Colmes on the radio, just as Colmes has often interviewed Fred Phelps. Anderson's "bold stand" wasn't quite on a par with Paul's sermon on Mars Hill, or Luther posting the 95 Theses, but it got publicity, and that seems to be the name of the game in Anderson's mind.

His odd interpretations of the Bible are, well, odd. In written and filmed sermons, he teaches the following:

1. Jesus wore pants, not a robe or flowing garment of any kind.

2. It is a sin for any woman to utilize the services of a male gynecologist or obstetrician, and any man who specializes in either field is a sexual pervert. This can be terribly inconvenient, because he also preaches that

3. Any form of birth control is a sin.

4. It is not only unnecessary, but actually sinful, to attend a Christian college or Bible institute. Anderson attended neither.

5. His remarks often hint at anti-Semitism, but in this one area, he has not spoken out boldly. He is certainly not zealous for the Jews, unless it is to see them damned.

6. He is - - - - I cannot avoid using the word; it's the only word that applies - - - obsessed with women's clothing, which is only proper if it meets his own standards of modesty. He is worse than any IFB preacher in this regard.

7. He believes that it is a sin for a married woman (with or without children) to work outside the home. Not just a mistake or a bad choice: a sin.

8. I apologize for this part, but it's all over YouTube. On the basis of 1 Samuel 25, he teaches, as Biblical doctrine, that it is sinful for a man to urinate in a sitting position, and that it probably indicates homosexuality. He goes into great length on this subject.

Enough of the craziness; there's plenty more. Earlier this year, perhaps feeling that he wasn't getting enough attention, he preached a sermon entitled "Why I Hate Barack Obama," and said that he was praying for Obama to die, preferably of AIDS, and praying for him to go to Hell. This also made CNN and Fox. Apart from Fred Phelps, Jim Bakker, and Jimmy Swaggart, I know of no preacher who has brought more reproach to the Name of Christ, or given the enemies of the Lord more reason to blaspheme.

All in all, Steven Anderson is not a man whose "ministry" I would recommend. I consider him a novice, a stripling, a liar, and very possibly a paranoid egomaniac. As one who has a mental disorder myself, I do not throw these words around carelessly. In many of his sermons, he can be heard saying, "If you don't like my preaching, then get the Hell out of my church!" The last "pastor" who talked that way in public was Jim Jones of the People's Temple.

I am not linking to his church site or the various videos. They're easy to find; indeed, they're hard to avoid. But Anderson's name came up in another thread, and this is just a glimpse of the man.

Let's classify this as a rant because I'm certainly not raving or rejoicing about it.

I've never heard of the Gay Games but apparently Gay Games VIII is kicking off in Cologne, Germany this weekend. They even have their own Federation! There are over 9600 registrations! It's the Olympics for queers!

Did you know that American diver Greg Louganis, former LA Dodger outfielder Glenn Burke, rugby player Gareth Thomas, basketball player Sheryl Swoopes (who has a son and didn't discover she was gay till later in life ), and Canadian swimmer Mark Tewksbury are among those who are "out of the closet and into the locker room?" Do you care? I can't say that I do, but I'm astonished that the queers have their own version of the Olympic Games. They even have major sponsors like AT&T and Tylenol! It's not even new! It was started in San Francisco (there's a surprise) in 1982! ......

It was started in San Francisco (there's a surprise) in 1982! ......

OL July 28, 2010 at 8:07 pm
100 million Facebook users added to a publicly available torrent file
By Rhonda Callow

Information relating to a fifth of Facebook’s users is now available for download. By anybody!

Facebook

A directory containing the personal information of (and be sure to say this in your best Dr. Evil voice) 100 million Facebook users has been made available on a torrent site and the almost 3 GB file can be downloaded by absolutely anybody. Ron Bowes of Skull Security created a script that harvested user information from Facebook’s user directory.

According to the Skull Security blog, the torrent contains:

* The URL of every searchable Facebook user’s profile
* The name of every searchable Facebook user, both unique and by count (perfect for post-processing, datamining, etc)
* Processed lists, including first names with count, last names with count, potential usernames with count, etc
* The programs I used to generate everything

Okay, so what could be done with the information contained in the torrent file? Well, it could be used to create a list of what are probably the most common user names (from the blog):

129369 jsmith

79365 ssmith

77713 skhan

75561 msmith

74575 skumar

72467 csmith

71791 asmith

67786 jjohnson

66693 dsmith

66431 akhan

Armed with a list of user names, somebody could potentially use brute force methods to establish the passwords that go along with those user names.

It’s important to note that this does not represent a breach of Facebook’s security and the information harvested by Bowes is information that people have chosen to make publicly available. What people should, however, learn from this incident is the importance of not over-sharing information on social networks and ensuring that your accounts are protected by a strong password.

Seeing as there are roughly 500 million Facebook users, you’ve got about a 1 in 5 chance of being included in that torrent file. Will this make you reconsider what personal information you’re making public, or do you really not care if your details are available to everyone?

II Cor. 1:8-11; 4:7-18

Weakness In Ministry

I, as a pastor, have come to really appreciate these passages. Paul admitted that, at times, the demands of the ministry were overwhelming and they were “burdened beyond measure, above strength,” even despairing of life. In Chapter 4 he adds further descriptive expression to the realities of his ministry experience, but then shares the spiritual realities and purposes of God for them. All these things are described as for our sake and the strength we need for each day to be found in focusing on the eternal.

But Paul also reminds us of the greater reason for these trials in 1:9-11. It is so that we would not “trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead…to deliver us.” Those who serve the Lord “full-time” should not do so in their own strength, but in God’s. They must, too, trust in the Lord.

FOR TODAY: Note II Cor. 1:11. Are you helping by praying for your spiritual leaders daily about this?
Weaknesses Welcomed!

Sometimes God allows us to become afflicted with difficult circumstances or conditions that linger for a long time. Some of them can overwhelm us or just nag at us over time, leaving us in a weakened condition, spiritually, emotionally, mentally, or physically. In such times we pray fervent, persistent prayers for deliverance from these conditions, but sometimes God answers in the negative, choosing the suffering to continue in order to accomplish His purposes in us.

Paul had learned that he had to accept these special afflicting situations, to give thanks for them, and to then discover that, “when I am weak, then I am strong.” When he saw the benefits of His weakness in allowing the power of Christ to strengthen him, he could then boast and even take pleasure in his infirmities, persecutions, distresses, etc. Can you thank God for such times of weakness? It is because we are weak that He can demonstrate His strength!

What does the Bible say about debt? Debt is a huge problem in American homes and government, it's destroying our financial system and it is the reason for the recession we're in right now. This problem is spreading and hurting other nations worldwide. With that being said, don't you think the Bible would have something to say on the subject?

Amazingly enough, the Bible talks about money more than Hell, baptism, and church attendence COMBINED. Money is an important subject in the Bible, and God certainly has some things to say about debt.

All I can say is this, I wish I would have known these principles ten years ago.

1. Not all debt is a sin.

Ps. 112:5, "A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion."

Here we see a good man who lends money. If all debt is a sin, then God wouldn't talk about this man being good and lending money out. If debt was a sin, then this man would be actually aiding and abetting sin! So from this we can see that not all debt is sin.

2. It is a sin to borrow and not pay again.

Ps. 37:21, "The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth."

This is particularly touchy, considering many Christians have done just that in the last few years. I'm not insensitive to the fact that many good people have lost their jobs and in turn lost their homes. It's a tragic thing.

It doesn't change the word of God though. If you've found yourself in a situation to where there's nothing you can do about it and you're not going to be able to pay your lender back, recognize it's a sin and confess it to God. God is good, and nothing changes who He is no matter what our circumstances are in life.

3. It is a sin to co-sign a loan.

Pr. 17:18, "A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend."

"Surety" means collateral. In this verse, a man is going into a debt agreement using his friend, because it's the only way he can. Think about it, banks LOVE to loan money. That's all they every want to do, it's like Christmas and birthdays for them. For some mysterious reason though, they won't loan money to your friend or relative! That is, however, unless you put down your good name as collateral. God says we can't do that, it's a sin to co-sign a loan.

4. Unsecured debt is a sin, but secured debt is not.

Prov. 22:26-27, "Be not thou one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts. "27": If thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?"

Having debt that is secured, such as a home loan or a car loan, is not a sin because the loan is tied to something that you can (theoretically) sell and pay off the loan with. Credit card debt is sin though, because it is unsecured debt. The debt is not tied to anything; the only "surety" (collateral) is YOU and YOUR GOOD NAME. It is a sin to borrow with no collateral. In this verse, the collateral is the actual good name of the person, not an object.

5. Being late on bills is a sin.

Rom. 13:8, "Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law."

There is a difference between a contract, and "owing" someone something. When an employer hires someone, they enter into a contract with that employee. At the end of the pay period, they are required to fulfill their contract and pay their employee. Before then, they do not "owe" the employee in the Biblical definition of it, the owing begins if they break the contract and are late in paying.

This is the only logical definition of the word "owe" in the Bible, any other definition would mean we are sinning by having a monthly light bill, water bill, or rent bill because we have an obligation to pay. Having an obligation to pay and owing are two different things. Owing is breaking the obligation, by being late or by walking out on the agreement.

6. While secured debt is not a sin, it can be and in many cases it is a hindrance and a snare.

Pr. 22:7, "The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender."

God's perfect will is for us to go cash and carry. There is an allowance made for secured debt, but even then you put yourself under a burden. Secured debt must be entered into with much prayer, not lightly as our culture would tell you.

Add a couple of tablespoons of coconut oil.
Add some fresh fruit. I prefer blueberries and/or strawberries. If you can't get fresh fruit, frozen berries are fine as long as there's no added sugars.
Top with some walnuts I crumble them up a little).
