A Saudi couple tortured their Sri Lankan maid after she complained of a too heavy workload by hammering 24 nails into her hands, legs and forehead, officials said on Thursday.

Although this is one of the more hideous cases I have read about, it is by no means an isolated incident. Asian maids are generally treated like slaves by many of their Arab employers in the Gulf, and not just in Saudi Arabia.

Yes, but as Worddigger says, it is very typical of the way the Saudis (and pother Arab zillionaires) treat the hired help, especially women: like slaves. Work them to death? Rape them? Pound nails into them? Why not? They're chattel property.

That's the "religion of peace:" and its headquarters (Mecca and Medina) are not in Afghanistan or Iraq: they're in Saudi Arabia.
