It's high time we had a thread like this, if anybody wants to play. This isn't "Name That Tune;" we won't be baffling each other with lyrics, looking for titles. But any other music trivia questions are fine. As in other games: when the correct answer is given, the winner will ask the next question. I'll go first, with an easy one.

A single songwriter has had his songs recorded by the following people (and others). Who is he? Hint: he is also a performer.

His songs have been recorded by Chet Atkins, Shirley Bassey, Harry Belafonte, the Box Tops, the Brothers Four, Glen Campbell, Vikki Carr, Johnny Cash, Petula Clark, Ray Conniff, Floyd Cramer, Michael Crawford, Bobby Darin, Deep Purple, the Drifters, David Essex, Percy Faith, José Feliciano, the Four Tops, Dizzy Gillespie, Bobby Goldsboro, Engelbert Humperdinck, Julio Iglesias, Chris Isaak, Jay & the Americans, Waylon Jennings, Tom Jones, Bert Kaempfert, André Kostelanetz, Patti LaBelle, Peggy Lee, Liberace, Mantovani, Johnny Mathis, Ronnie Milsap, the Monkees, Wayne Newton, Roy Orbison, Johnny Paycheck, Elvis Presley, Boots Randolph, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, B.J. Thomas, Tina Turner, UB40, Gary Puckett & the Union Gap, Urge Overkill, Billy Vaughn, the Ventures, Bobby Vinton, Junior Walker & the All-Stars, Roger Whittaker, Andy Williams, and Bobby Womack.
Johnny Cash?????

No ma'am, Johnny Cash was on the list of people who had recorded this man's songs. But he is not the songwriter in question. The songwriter himself is not in the list.

Since so many people have looked at this question, and have not been as brave as MrsHayseed in offering a guess, I will give you another hint. Remember the first hint: the guy is also a performer. The answer is not Elton John.
Kris Kristofferson?

That's an excellent guess. Kristofferson is a performer, and his songs have been recorded by everybody. But the most famous cover of a Kristofferson song was "Me and Bobby McGee," by Janis Joplin. Joplin isn't on the list, although I did say "and others." But if Joplin ever performed any of Our Guy's songs, she never recorded one.

Close, but not quite.
Neil Diamond

HOORAY!

Give that sister a Precious Moments figurine of Cassjade's pit bull eating Vania's hedgehogs! It's Laura's turn to ask a question.

Everybody talks about Paul Simon, Billy Joel, and Elton John as the great songwriters, but I think Neil Diamond is better than any of them. He hasn't had as many hits in his own name, but he's been covered by more artists.

This has always been one of my very favorite Neil Diamond songs, because it's about childhood and loneliness and stuff. For a very different rendition of a very different Diamond song, I'm also putting up one by Johnny Cash, recorded toward the end of his life. While we're waiting for Laura.

I'm sure that Precious Moments figurine will be one for the mantlepiece...NOT!
Before achieving success as a singer, was Luciano Pavarotti: a) a chef; b) a teacher; or c) a librarian?
