STEPHEN HAWKINS SAYS SCIENCE WILL WIN OVER RELIGION
Stephen Hawkins, Cambridge professor of mathematics and best-selling author, says science will win out over religion. In an interview with Diane Sawyer of ABC World News, Hawkins was asked if there is a way to reconcile religion and science. He replied, "There is a fundamental difference between religion, which is based on authority, [and] science, which is based on observation and reason. Science will win because it works"

I suppose Dr Hawkins doesn't realize they are not in competition in the first place . Religion has its place and so does science . Sometimes they do contradict one another bot often that is due to our own flawed thinking .
I have no trouble with the fact that the Universe is billions of years old and yes I dont see a contradiction between that and the creation account in Genesis . This is not religion vs science . It is a matter of man vs man .

Andrew,
I beg to differ with you on the statement in bold. It is not a matter of man vs. man. It is a matter of man vs God. The Bible which contains the creation account is God's wisdom recorded for man. Science is man's attempt to deny God and make his wisdom superior to that of God.
People tend to forget that Charles Darwin was not a scientist, he was not a biologist, he was not an anthropologist, none of his ideas were based upon anything scientific. His beliefs cannot be considered THEORY, there was never any empirical evidence or scientific method applied in the creation of his belief system. At best his ideas are mere hypothesis.
Sinful man was so eager to rid themselves of God and a coming judgment, they grasped on to Darwin's fantastical ideas, believing them by pure faith alone, creating and falsifying evidence to support their ideas, and claiming that anyone who disagrees are backward, superstitious, uneducated, fools.
The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God.

Gary there is no need to beg to differ you way differ as you will haha
I totally disagree Science is not mans attempt to deny God or make his wisdom superior to God .Science is mans attempt to understand the physical world and his place in it and how to manipulate it .
( There is both a positive and a negative manipulation )
No it is man vs man in regards to this silly idea that science and religion are competitors .. Man is fighting man over THIS and it is quite childish .

Actually Daniel Darwin was what one may be called an experimental scientist
Though that doesn't mean that his theories were based on solid evidence . I think we both agree that they were not .
I think you are right to an extent about the rebellion of man in favor of pseudoscience but i think there is another side to this .There were people and still are who are honest seekers . We as human beings have a desire to ask the big questions and to explore alternative answers . Without that there is no critical thinking . And without that there is no liberty of conscious . I think that what is most often the case is that you have both the rebellion as well as the desire to ask explore investigate working together at the same time . Of course all true answers are found in God but I don't believe that God is opposed to science .
" 'I want to know why the universe exists.' Science can never answer that question or a thousand others." Then the writer goes on to ask a series of questions, the answers to which are quite plainly given in Scripture.
Seems to me that God is gonna win out over science and religion both. Religion, after all, is man's attempt to try to reach God. Christian relationship is God's attempt to reach man, and that is where the answers lie.
God isn't opposed to science - the Bible actually proves science. Who gave man the knowledge to make scientific discoveries? Science and its "discoveries" will see to it that many people, professing themselves to be wise, will be completely without excuse as they're judged because science, if viewed properly, attests to the existence and work of God.
The problem is man's tendency to think more highly of himself than he ought, but for all his efforts to be rid of God, God will not be ousted from the universe He created.
One day, EVERY knee shall bow and EVERY tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

That is the best answer so far ..

Ecclesiastes 3:11.
He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.
Oh wow, I know I've read that verse many times, but I've never thought about it in context of modern science. Thank you for that insight.
