San Francisco , California - [April 1906]

This is a real treasure! "You are there" for a cable car ride in San Francisco . This film was "lost" for many years. It was the first 35 mm Film ever. It was taken by camera mounted on the front of a cable car. The Number of automobiles is staggering for 1906. Absolutely amazing! The Clock tower at the end of Market Street at the Embarcadero wharf is still There. How many "street cleaning" people were employed to pick up after the horses?
Great historical film! Watch the scampering as "Joe Public" races away from autos, horses, cable cars and bicycles and the willy-nilly traffic pattern of visible autos, trucks, horse drawn carriages and bikes on Market Street .
This film, originally thought to be from 1905 until David Kiehn with the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum figured out exactly when it was shot. From New York trade papers announcing the film showing to the wet streets from recent heavy rainfall & shadows indicating time of year & actual weather and conditions on historical record, even when the cars were registered (he even knows who owned them and when the plates were issued!). It was filmed only four days before the Great California Earthquake of April 18th 1906 and shipped by train to NY for processing.

Ooooooooh my and I thought traffic of to-day was hectic. There was no organisation in traffic direction, they just seemed to come from left to right, from right to left, straight at you and even right across the front of you! I am sure there were many accidents back then too. It was good though to see all those fancy dresses and how the people just ambled along in the middle of the road. Good post, I really like to see how people lived years ago, as I am sure the next generation will look back on our generation and go wow did they really live like that, and "what was she nearly wearing", I say that quite a lot now never mind the next generation. ha.ha.

You would nearly have to wear blinkers when walking down the streets nowadays wouldn't you? We are supposed to keep our eyes away from lustful sights, but oh my that is so hard. Men are acting, looking like and dressing like women, women are acting like, dressing like and looking like men. Girls are running about half naked in all weathers all in the name of vanity and pride. I just despair !!!! If some of them would just take the time to actually look at themselves before they go out and try and perceive how others see them, but then again beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so they say, so there are an awful lot of blind people out there.
Anyways, are you taking your medication, if not then why not? The spies are out here and we will be keeping tabs on you so beware. We have to look out for one another so we are only keeping tabs on you in Christian love.

That is why the little girls (12 - 18) have a father, he knows what they look like and suspect how they are perceived by others. If they only knew how driven men are by our God given need. Men are really looks-oriented and the force that courses through our veins doesn't need any help, it is so unfair to us men. Now what is this thread about again.

That was fascinating. You have to wonder though how many of those folks in that video didn't survive the Earthquake. How many went to Hell never hearing about Salvation through Jesus Christ?
