Here is an interesting history story that I found out about a little while ago. Many of you may not be interested, but I sure was! Since we found pictures, I also posted them.

In May, 1909, there was a really bad tornado in the town of Hollis, Kansas. Hollis, at the time, had 150 people living in it. It destroyed the whole town.

Well, anyways, they took some of the wood from this demolished town in 1909, transported it about 2 1/2 miles away beyond a dirt road and built a house with it.

This house was the home of my great grandpa, my grandpa, my dad, and myself. When I left for college, my parents ended up moving about a mile away to a different house and it now sits empty. It's gonna fade away just like all the other old homes in Kansas do. Kinda sad... Cry2

Just thought I would share this little nugget of Kansas history. Oh, the population of Hollis: 0. There are still some old buildings, an old schoolhouse, and an old elevator there, but no people!
Wow!

I love the spiffy dressed guy in the suit and tie. A tornado is no excuse not to dress well.
After looking at that pictures, I can't tell, but it looks like the bottom half of his suit is wet. The pants and bottom part of his jacket are darker and it doesn't look like a flaw in the picture. I'm thinking that the water rose in the cellar they were in and he got wet.

That was always a good Kansas one. What do you do if you are under a flood warning AND a tornado warning? Do you go to the cellar and risk drowning or don't go in the cellar and risk being blown away?

I know that the article mentions a family of 5 that disappeared. ???

Quote:Kansas City, May 15 - - Five members of the Eckstrom family, supposed to have been killed on their farm near Hollis, Kas., in last night's tornado, and Charles Quance, a ranchman, who was believed to have succumbed near Larned, Kas., escaped unharmed to tornado cellars. The fact became known late today when wire communication, demoralized by the storm, was resumed with these points. The known dead from the storm in this part of the southwest is three and the injured fifty-five. None of the injured succumbed to their injuries today.

This was interesting. The family of five were found safe and unhurt, according to the above quote from web page you listed.

Definitely and interesting question, too, about the flood warning AND tornado warning!! lol
Wow, thanks for the update, Gary. Guess I got that information late due to wire communications being down! Ha, Ha!!!
I can't imagine. That's quite the story, and personal history!
