By rank member I mean the common garden variety type.

Before we got shipwrecked, America was a decent country. Crime rate was low. Since I've been gone, the crime rate graph looks like a hockey stick. Homosexuals and atheists were in the tiny minority. Now, they are everywhere.

Indeed it does. It's been conquered and colonized by smaller nations many times. Kinda like Florida, but without the nice weather.
